Life on a flower farm is rarely predictable. At Pop & Petal Blooms, just outside Edinburgh, some days flow smoothly - early morning light, rows of seasonal blooms, and a sense of calm in the garden. Other days are busy, full of tasks you don’t see in photos: admin, emails, marketing, deliveries, and sometimes juggling farm life with my toddler.
Each day is different, but every day connects me to nature and reminds me why I grow flowers.
Early Morning: Harvesting the Blooms
Harvest usually starts before the sun rises. Walking through rows of blooms while the world wakes up can feel calm and grounding. Cutting flowers at their peak, with dew on the petals, is one of the most satisfying parts of farm life.
Not every morning is quiet. Rain, wind, or extra tasks can make harvesting harder. Some days I have my toddler with me, which requires adjusting how I work. Even on busy mornings, there’s satisfaction in a basket of freshly cut stems.
Mid-Morning: Admin, Marketing, and Tasks
After harvesting, much of the day is spent on admin, social media, emails, planning workshops, and managing stock. These tasks aren’t glamorous, but they are necessary.
Some days feel overwhelming - tools need fixing, seedlings need attention, or the weather doesn’t cooperate. Other days involve balancing farm work with a toddler’s schedule. Farm life is a mix of caring for flowers and managing practical responsibilities.
Afternoon: Arranging and Reflection
Afternoons are often spent arranging flowers for bouquets, events, or photography. Working with flowers is grounding and reminds me why I started the farm. Choosing colours, feeling textures, and arranging blooms is simple, mindful work.
Sustainability is part of everything we do. Composting, crop rotation, and soil care ensure we care for the land and the flowers we grow.
The Real Rhythm of Farm Life
Life on a flower farm in Scotland is not always picture-perfect. There are early mornings, admin and marketing work, unpredictable weather, and family responsibilities. Some days are calm and reflective; others are busy and messy.
Even on the busiest days, there are small moments of joy - a bloom opening, sunlight through petals, or a child nearby. Farm life is a mix of work, learning, and mindful connection to nature.
